New Movies to Watch for

July 24, 2010 0220

This is just a list of movies coming out and why I would keep an eye out for them.

Black Swan, directed by Darren Aronofsky. Due out November, 2010.
To those of you that don't know, Darren Aronofsky wrote and directed Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain and many several other great films. His movies are always deeply thought provoking and offer a unique viewing experience.

Shattered Union
Despite being based on a video game, this still looks good to me. The plot is about a modern-day American civil war. It will be written by J. Michael Straczynski, who was the writer and director of Babylon 5, which predominately featured an Earth civil war. Through this series he showed that when it comes to civil wars, you can't top his writing. He also wrote and directed Jeremiah, another of my favorite shows.

Battleship, directed by Peter Berg. Due out 2012.
Peter Berg, the director of Very Bad Things, Hancock, and many other films, has for years been wanting to make this film, however, no movie studio would pick it up so for years it's been collecting dust. He finally got a studio by changing it slightly... to a film adaption of... Battleship. That's right, the board game. Well, don't walk away yet, there's more. His idea... was for an alien movie. That's right... the film adaption for Battleship is an alien movie. Is anyone else confused? Apparently, Berg's idea was for an admiral in command of a fleet of five ships to thwart an alien invasion from the sea. Why would aliens attack from the sea? Again, I am forced to ask, is anyone else confused? Due to Berg's previous movies and his casting choices so far, I can only assume this will be a comedy.

Skyline, directed by Colin and Greg Strause. Due out November, 2010.
Colin and Greg Strause worked on visual effects for Avatar, 300, Terminator 3, and many other films, so you know this film will at the least look good. The trailer shows and alien invasion of Los Angeles. It is unclear if the invasion is centered there or if this is a global event though. This film could go either way at this time but it intrigued me.

Star Trek 2. Due out 2012.
Nothing more really needs to be said here.

World War Z
Based on the post-apocalyptic novel of the same name, this is about a zombie apocalypse but rather, as already stated, is post-apocalyptic, meaning it has already happened, so this is not your traditional zombie movie. If accurate to the book, it will contain a series of anecdotal stories from various perspectives. This will also be written by J. Michael Straczynski.

Forbidden Planet, directed by David Twohy.
A re-imagining of the original, which I'm sure you are all familiar with. David Twohy also directed Pitch Black and The Arrival. J. Michael Straczynski will be writing this as well.
